Maintaining a Balance Between Discipline and Freedom

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

The task of disciplining often leads to confrontation from the child, resulting in unhappiness of the child as well as the parents. So parents always oscillate between discipline and freedom, unable to reach an equilibrium. Let us attempt to answer the question how to discipline and how much to discipline?

Give logic and not just instructions: Parents have a long list of do’s and don’ts for the child. What they never do is explain to the child why he should refrain from doing something. If you don’t want your child towatch toomuch of T.V. or do his homework on his own, reason out with him.

Be firm but polite: Be firm in such a way that the child doesn’t develop a mind whichquestions ‘Why dictate me?’ Your firmness should not be accompanied with fits of anger, criticism or physical punishment, otherwise your very purpose of discipline will be defeated and your child  will become a rebel.

Self discipline is the best form of discipline: Self discipline comes from freedom and appreciation. Appreciate your child for every small attempt he makes in the right direction. If he doesn’t, then let him be responsible for his actions and face consequences.

Let children be themselves: When children run around in the house, jump on the sofa, make noises and shout, parents start thinking how indisciplined their child is becoming. Do ask yourself whether you are disciplining him or stopping him from being a child. Don’t expect a child to behave like an adult. Let him enjoy and treasure some golden memories of childhood.

Love is the answer whatever be the question: Talk to your child in a way that he sees love in your disciplining. Your child must feel that you are fair, understanding and someone he can confide in and rely on. Remember, your love is the biggest motivation for a child to adopt the right behavior.
